After attending Ben Mathis’ lecture on creativity it really opened my eyes into what it takes to become a part of the computer games industry. The creativity in the field is at an extremely high level. But how creative do you need to be. Is creativity a trait that you are born with or can it be developed? Well I think its an element of both, every one is born with some element of creativity whether it be as a builder or a ballerina but it is the desire to learn skills that sparks the creative side of a person. For example I have no desire to be a ballerina, nor do I have the agile body but if I did and had the desire to I could in my opinion learn the skills and focus all my creativity on that.
Some lucky people I have discovered have the ability to pull thoughts and processes from thin air, I have come across people like this all through my academic life. Where as people like me have to take time and effort to research and development ideas. Is this a lack of creativity on my part, most probably. But can I produce equally creative work, of course just takes more time. I really don’t know what to write any more so will keep this blog up to date with the work that I’m doing most probably after my assessment on the 14th of jan as well I need to sort that out first
Laters

My one Big Post on Creativity (edit: was my big post now just a rant on creativity in education)

Good evening all this is my one great big entry about creativity, I decided to opt out of the many small ones as well I find it hard enough to start posts so this way I only have to do it once, (well thrice if you include the previous posts). Previously I’ve looked at both the definitions and the cognitive/psychological studies on creativity but personally I find that all rather boring so in this post its just really going too be my ramblings about what I feel about creativity, what it is and who possess it.
Creativity is in all of us, I spoke about how everyone posses it in previous posts so I wont repeat my self to take up space however tempting it is. But after attending the various lectures and talks on creativity throughout the year I have developed my own views on creativity. To start with I will describe my views about peoples take on creativity and what is or isn’t creative. Almost any aspect of life in which a person undertakes something can be describes as being creative. But it’s the fine line between being creative and being academic that some people, especially older generations find hard to see any sort of crossover. I certainly know that when I was growing up academic subjects were pushed far more that creative ones. My dad couldn’t care less if I was doing poor in art but as long as my maths, science and English was ok I was allowed to go on happily with out getting a serious beatdown, I say beatdown it was more verbally than physically, ok all verbally but it was still as hard as any smack round the face. My maths and science were generally good but as you can probably tell from my blog my English was pretty sub par. Anyway the point I’m trying to make here is that when I was at school art was never pushed it was always a choice and it took me a long while to discover my passion for it. I would like to think how developed my skills would be now if it had been more common in my earlier years or how much I would resent it now and probably be working full time at Tesco’s if that were the case. Speaking to elders as well confirmed what I thought about the older generations. When my dad was at school art was barely an options let alone dance or drama, people who dropped out to pursue these lines were generally considered “fags”.
Now however I think the system is improving however it is nowhere near the standard it should be. I can understand how hard it is to have creative courses in the curriculum, because they are notoriously hard to mark standards. When I did art at A-levels I admit I failed and it wasn’t because of my lack of skill but it was the fact that 40% of the course structure was jus pure writing, analytical and basically the ability to chat utter bolocks about a piece of work which is a concept I could never get to grips with, saying shit like, why did the artist use green for the ground, could be because of his envy with the world, no its because grass is generally fucking green, I’m sure that’s why he painted it that colour, sorry about the language but hey I failed because of this so I have every right to be angry. Well out of nothing I have got on to creativity in education and on this subject I have come across a very interesting set of notes published by a professor Ken Robinson about how he wants to promote creativity in education clickHERE for these notes, it’s a pretty long read and I have to admit I didn’t read it all but he does put forward some interesting points about how important creativity is in the school system in the U.K. In conclusion to the creativity in education part of this I feel that it does need to be pushed in schools from an early age and let children find something they love and have a particular talent at before maths and English is pushed on them at a higher level and I think this will stop a lot of children resenting school, be it music, drama, art, sports, dance or indeed maths, science or English it would defiantly help the state of the schools in this country. Well at the beginning I said this was going to be one long blog but I feel I have covered one topic in enough detail to post this, next one will be up shortly.

Now for my second entry in the creativity series of blogs.
In This blog I will be exploring creativity in a psychological and cognitive sense. How the brain works and many people’s theories and my own take on what motivates me and others.

Sigmund Freud described creativity by suggesting that it arises as a result of frustrated desires for fame, fortune, and love, with the energy that was previously tied up in frustration and emotional tension in the neurosis being sublimated into creative activity. Basically creativity comes from built up tension in the brain from the lack of the persons desires. I personally think that Freud talked bolocks; I mean this comes from the man who claims that all children have a sexual desire from their mother and a fear of castration from their father. In my opinion he was either very perverse or a few tools short of a full shed. But what he suggests here about where creativity comes from is entirely plausible although its will take some convincing.

“Do Creativity and intelligence come hand in hand?”
In my opinion most certainly not, I do not think a person needs to be clever in order to be creative. Every single person in this world is creative in some aspect or another. An autistic child who may have the intelligence of someone half his age but the drawing skills of a hardened veteran. Take a look at this video of Stephen Wiltshire a suffer of autism but with the most outstanding abilities.

In a psychological sense there have been many case studies searching for a link between creativity and intelligence, A very popular model is what has come to be known as "the threshold hypothesis", proposed by Ellis Paul Torrance, which holds that a high degree of intelligence appears to be a necessary but not sufficient condition for high creativity. This means that, in a general sample, there will be a positive correlation between creativity and intelligence, but this correlation will not be found if only a sample of the most highly intelligent people are assessed.

I am going to end this entry here because well I did enough psychology at A-level and this stuff bores me so I’d rather look at more interesting approaches and ideas to Creativity but may well return here if a get stuck for content.

Good evening all this is probably my first blog, and first of many i hope on here that i have writen not involving some sort of task. But i thiught i may as well start with something new in the way in which my work has been going. Ive decided to turn over a new leaf, pull my freakishly long index finger out and actually get some fucking work done for a change. im now onto getting my blogs finished off for when im back, along with finishing off bits and bobs with other projects but i thought tonight id just write one first about what ive been doing today as ive been stuck in all day with flu, and its sunday so no work pour moi.
Watched Superbad for the millionth time today and if you havent seen it i very much recomend it along with knocked up, both fresh comedy genious along with some great up coming comedy actors. Also watched I am legend today which i thought was awsome although the trailer wasnt very accurate to the film in a sence that i was completly different to what i expected. But all in all a good zombie, vampire, world is dead family film.
Played a bit more of kane and lynch also today. Got it for xmas and a few friends have told me that its an annoyingly short game, so im trying to not make the same mistake as i did with assasins creed and complete it in a day and a half so i can actually get my 40 quids worth. But the multiplayer is pretty badass on it.
So that pretty much concludes my day will follow this up with another creativity blog maybe 2night or 2moro afternoon between my immence new years eve shift at the pub(11-4 then 8-3 in the eve ) woop de 'fuckin' do so untill then ja bless rude boys and girls much love x

cre·a·tiv·i·ty

1. Just researching for this blog I have come across well over 50 different descriptions and variations. Being creative can be used to describe almost anything that is being done by someone to produce an outcome. For example the more obvious forms of creativity are that of an artist producing an original sculpture or painting, or an author writing a poem or a story, but there are many subtle less obvious forms that need a bit more time to consider the creativity involved. A maid cleaning a house for example, are they not being creative and expressing there talents to produce a desired outcome?

Whilst studying for this I came across a very interesting quote from a published writing on creativity.

“Creativity involves the translation of our unique gifts, talents and vision into an external reality that is new and useful.”

Although this is a broad statement I think this pretty much sums up what I feel creativity is as a definition and I will explore this in greater detail in my next blogs.

Introduction into games technology

In the past I have used a variety of consoles and own a fair few myself. All of which are very different in their own ways. The ergonomics of each controller differ in many styles and especially in the newer consoles a vast degree of anthropometric data was taken into consideration in the design. The links provided for this blog show off some of the different designs and I especially found the link on the Playstation 3 controller very incite full with this helpful Gif animation

the earlier consoles were less structural than this, taking the original Nintendo entertainment system controller as you can see this controller was not designed well and was awkward to handle. The Playstation dual shock controller I find is the easiest to use as the design is simple but effective and is very easy to just pick up and play. The concept for the PS3 controller has changed now since the launce opting for one virtually identical to the PS2 apart from the R2 and L2 buttons are now triggers which was adopted from the Xbox 360 for ease in racing games. The original Xbox controller I found horrible to play with as it was very large with buttons in difficult and awkward places making it hard to multi task. I think this was corrected very well in the design for the Xbox 360 Controller. One of the more outlandish designs I feel is the Nintendo 64’s controller with I think is ergonomically perfect and fits snugly in grip and does work well with the 95th percentile. (That means 95% of people should be able to use it to its intended function.
The Nintendo Wii remote I think is a very clever design and by far the most different from any other controller out there with the nun-chucker remote very well designed. However there were a few design floors which in simple maths
Sweaty palms + Wii remote + forceful movement = broken television.
By large all the modern day controllers are pretty much perfect with a bit of tweaking here and there and have defiantly learned from the mistakes of previous designs.

Storytelling in games.

After reviewing some of the links and also great experience of playing many different types of games I don’t think having a story in a game is fundamentally important for all types of games. I mean you have the obvious like sports games such as pro evolution soccer which has massive sales but no story. Some sports games do try and incorporate a story such as virtua tennis and all the WWF/WWE games but even in these games the story is there to provide single player capabilities in a largely multiplayer game, so maybe in that aspect it is essential to boost sales. Sorry I’m sort of arguing with myself here.
There are many games that do rely on stories for 100% of their games, after reviewing the links games such as Max Payne and silent hill both 3rd person action adventure games rely souly on there being an exceptional story to provide the user with the emotions that will keep them engrossed throughout the game. Games such as the GTA series do need a story line but its does not need to be as fundamental or as well written as games such as resident evil or splinter cell. FPS games such as halo or half life do need a small back story but there is less of a need for one closely related to a film as the main point of these games is game play how well it works and just generally going round blowing the shit out of things.
Games such as the Sims or second life have really no need for a story at all because these type of simulation games provide all the necessities for the user to create their own stories which is the appeal of these types of games. So in conclusion there are many different games on the market to day and the vast majority of them have some form of story in them. From expert scripts written like films to games where the user creates their own stories.

Art Direction for games

After looking at the links to what it takes to be an art director and the writings of some art directors. I especially liked the web page from gameasutra showing “the day in the life of an art director” which gives me a great in site into what is involved once you become an art director. I view the role of a director as some one who has complete control over the way a game should look and feel. The director will have overall say on what the design of the characters, buildings etc in a game should look like and what effect they should have on the game play. He will then leave it up to his team to come up with designs and provide feedback until the result is perfect. I think to become an art director in the computer games industry you need good leadership skills in conjunction with excellent technical skills, imagination and ability. Also I think experience and passion for computer games is key. An art director in the computer games industry is not dissimilar to that in film or music as it is the director’s job to know what will sell and how to produce and encourage his team to produce an effective piece of media. I am defiantly aspiring to become a art director in a games company and even though from reading the challenging application forms online I think, from seeing what current directors feel about their job it can be very rewarding, and highly paid ha-ha.

Begin Knowledge of Game design

Reviews of links –

The first link is the web page written by Chris Crawford and its is arguing the point whether Computer games are an art form, he provides some good points for his argument that they should be considered an art form by describing art as
“something designed to evoke emotion through fantasy”

which essentially is what computer games are. This was obviously written some time a go as he refers to Pac-Man when talking about games and how there is no art in games but in today’s market there is defiantly a lot of passion that goes into the production of a game and can give people the same if not more enjoyment than say music, theatre, film or art. His writing also compares games to sweets and comic books in the way they attract kids by the way they are presented. I think that times have moved on now and computer games are defiantly played by a large number of adults throughout the world.
The next website is the gameasutra explaining the role of “levels” in games and how they have changed. Originally levels were increasingly challenging as they got further through the game but now the term level involves designing maps scenery and working on missions to fit the level and make sure the game flows freely. Now the transitions between levels is virtually seamless in a lot of games where it is getting harder to tell at what point the game becomes harder to play.
The random terrain website is a good website for someone getting in the industry as it provide lots of feedback from other designers and gives lots of information in that field
Blog entry
Upon looking at the role of game designers in the industry I have come to the conclusion that there is really no such a job as a “game designer” this was prevalent back in the late 70’s where games such as pong and Pac-man were developed usually by a single person or 1 or 2 people. Nowadays though computer games are built with teams 20, 30, 40 people strong and it takes this team to produce a good game. Game play I feel is a term to describe, not to be too bland but how the game plays. A good game will have a good flow and will keep the player constantly involved in a game by not being to repetitive and just being downright awesome. The Design principles do differ between genres also, for example FPS’s should have a clear structure where the levels flow but it is also clear where to go by creating the levels with as little ability to free roam as possible as this will make the game very hard to control. Role playing games however have the ability to introduce some sort of free roam as this can enhance the game play. Simulation games have little need for game designers by way of story or levels as a lot of this is created by the users. Racing games should be clearly structured with levels clearly prepared to only allow users to go one way. Sorry about the rambling but I’m really not the best at structuring my writing lol.

Writing and Games Journalism, an overview.

There are many forms of games writing in the world today, but the two main categories are formal and informal. There is the Games Journalism which will be for magazines such as pc games or PSX. These forms of writing are very professional and are written so that the majority of readers will understand. These come in the form of reviews, news, events ect. In the gaming world. The wages for these writers would be paid for by the publisher, for example the new games blog is published by the guardian online and also they do some writing in their newspapers. But there is a lot of informal work out there, unpaid, by people who just want to get the message out and people who are passionate about games and writing.
I’ve had a look at some of the websites and the style of writing does alter between each one. In the unpaid blogs the writing is very informal and is generally written how the person would talk. The formal writing uses a lot more technical terms and usually gives an unbiased view if it’s a review.
A high percentage of games writing is reviews and these are essential for the sale and marketing of new games. A good review in an established magazine could determine whether or not the game is a hit or a flop. There are also reviews on blogs which tend to be more biased to peoples preferences but can be a good way of gathering information about which game to buy.

A brief run through of the art for gams from each gen

Start - 1970's

<img style="cursor: pointer; A good example of this which I sourced from http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/crossplatform.ars/2 shows the comparison between developer costs and profits of two of the most successful games of their time. The first being the 1982 release of Pac-man for the Atari compared with the 2004 game halo 2 for the Xbox. Pac-man cost only $100, 00 usd to make but sold over 10million copies and $30 each, and was written by 1 programmer over a few months, where as Halo 2 needed 190 staff of artists, programmers etc and cost more than $40 million usd to make, but sold for $50 a time and to use its full capabilities needed a subscription to Xbox live online service for up to $20 a month. This just showing that games are increasingly becoming more expensive to manufacture but are turning over roughly the same profits as 20 years a go.

This leads me to my next subject which is the increase in power and technology of consoles. With the introduction of "next gen" consoles, the Xbox 360 being the first in November 2005 (I debate whether or not it is next gen) and the ps3 well this blog is a little late so coincidently today in approximately 12 hours in the US will be on sale. I have learnt to believe some people have been queuing since the 6th of November for this, eherm I won’t say any more. The Nintendo Wii is also set for release in December which will no doubtable take Japan by storm with its innovated new controller which, I think is awesome and its what Nintendo do best by showing you don’t need ridiculous budgets and ridiculously real graphics to be a hit and stay true to just having good, new and exiting games.

I think form here things can only get better and more expensive and soon enough i'm sure there will be thousands of game artists working on matrix like games where they appear real by accessing the mind. Either way it’s good, more jobs for me ha-ha.
I think there will be some significant pressures on the gaming industry if the hardware continues to increase in power as it could drive smaller companies out of existence, I’m willing to bet Nintendo won’t be around in 20 years time and I’m pretty sure Google will have there own platform out by then too.

Week 3 task: Video Games 1980's-90's

the 1980's was the decade of the computer games industry. Companies began to produce video games just for the commercial market. The early games produced by these companies were replicas of the existing games except technology now enabled them to be created much cheaper and smaller for a mass market.
The 3 main computers developed in the early 80's were:
Commodore 64
Apple II
Atari 800

The 80s was also known at 2the golden age of games". Many games in the 80s contained elements of what is used today. The game Defender, a scrolling shooter game(a shoot 'em up with a scrolling background) was the first game to contain a viewport outside of the players view, this was simply a radar displaying the enemies but it is still used widely today on the same to much bigger scales.
The game "Dungeons of Daggorath was the first to use a "heartbeat" health monitor which is widely adopted in most modern games.
Pole position a racing game from 1982 incorporated a rear view mirror (using pseudo 3D graphics) where the player could view what or who was behind them in a race.

The first "cult" game of the 80's was pacman however which acclaimed world wide popularity and was the game industries first "celebrity"

The 3rd Generation console’s
the first of the 3rd Generation consoles was the early Famicon also known as The Nintendo Entertainment system (NES) which dominated North America with Super Mario bros in the Mid 80s. This undone by the sudden rise in the 3rd generation consoles. The Sega Master system was one of these. The master system dominated the UK market.
The 3rd Generation consoles adopted the gamepad as opposed to the joystick and paddles, and it was on these consoles that many of the modern games consoles’ develop their ideas.
1987 bore the first Final Fantasy, an RPG which has now has over 10 sequels and won numerous awards and become the most successful RPG franchise. 1986 the first Zelda game was released and 1987 saw the first metal gear solid hit the shelves, all introducing a new genre into the gaming community.

The 1990's
If you were to consider the 1980's the decade of the rise and development of the computer game the 90s was surely the 'Hollywood' era where games were given huge budgets and increasing amounts of staff who worked on them. Larger companies were soon to take over the market being able to produce games of better quality and cheaper.
3D was the new format hitting the 90's, and Demo's. Shareware became a very popular way of selling games by giving the user a demo before they buy the game. Doom was one of these to adopt it and soon became one of the great games of the early 90's.
1992 saw the release of Dune II an RTS, not the first in its genre but help set the game mechanics for future blockbusters such as Warcraft and Command and Conquer. Alone in the dark (1992) set the standards for the now very popular survival horror genre.
The 1990's saw maxis develop the first Sims games such as sim city and sim earth.

The fourth generation consoles
These included the megdrive and the Snes and dominated the commercial market introducing games such as Sonic the hedgehog and super Mario to a new level and becoming increasingly popular.

Fifth generation consoles
These sprang up in the late 1990's and included the Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn.
This also introduced the first commercial CD-Rom based console (possible excluding the Sega CD extension for the megadrive, which indecently was appalling I’m not sure) both the Saturn and playstation adopting this format. The Nintendo 64 stuck with cartridges however which could be considered a bad move because it caused the final fantasy series to move to playstaion. All the 5th Generation consoles wanted to show off their 3D capabilities, the 64 used Mario 64 as its flagship title and became a milestone for 3d gamers.

Here we are week two of the blog, including now my summary of both the history of games 1950-1970 and a brief incite into my gaming history.

Task 1

History of games 1950 - 1970

The beginning of computer games started in 1952 by A.C Douglas at Cambridge university, where he wrote his PhD paper on human-computer interaction and created a the first graphical computer game, tic-tac-toe or noughts and crosses as its better known as on a . Then in 1958 William Higinbotham Developed the first real computer game as we know it today. It was a very simple game called "tennis for 2" and was developed and played on Brookhaven National laboratory Ocillioscope. His idea was to create an interactive game with an analogue controller where the computer could determine the projectile of the ball.

This is A screenshot of Tennis for 2
played on the ocillioscope.

In the 60's computer games were mainly creating using university computer mainframes by people who programmed them in their spare time. The first one of these to get acclaimed was "spacewar" created by a group of students at MIT in the USA, the team included Steve Russel on the new computer at the time "the DEC PDP-1" The game pitted two human players against each other, each controlling a space ship capable of firing missiles. It was then distributed with every new DEC machine and became the first "widely" available game on the market

Screenshot of Space war

The next significant step in the gaming world wouldn't come until 1966 when Ralph Baer created the first playable game on a TV set beginning the revolution that is the games console. It took him 18 years to develop and the final result was a game called "Chase" . This was merly the beginning and Baer went on to produce a prototype console that included a table tennis and target shooting type game.
It wasn't until 1972 that the first games console for home use was available to by, it was called the odyssey and came programmed with no less than 12 different games. This was generally known as the first generation console.

The second generation consoles came out in the mid 70's, and no longer were games hard wired onto microchips like the Odyssey. This brought the birth of cartridges. A program loaded onto a ROM (read-only-memory) chip that were cased and could be added to the console. The 1 machine which outsold all their competitors and really started the mass buying of games consoles was the Atari 2600, released with 9 available Games during the holiday season. The Atari became the most widely sold console of the 70's and was a real step towards the mass popularity of gaming.

Arcade Gaming

Computer space was widely regarded as the first arcade game and its founders would later go on to start up the Atari company.

Pong - 1973 became a huge hit and was shown at various expos and traveling fairs alongside various other mechanical games.

Space invaders 1977 changes the way arcade games were played

Thus concludes my brief history of games from 1950-1970 I hope you found that inciteful.

BTW just done a word count on that last blog and its bang on 1000 words bang on so sorry Mr P ill try and cut it down next time hehe

safe

In the beginning etc etc there was me Jabba, coming to DMU to get pissed and end up rich. It never really occured to me that i'd actually have to sit im my room ad do work. Only kidding i know this blog is goin to turn out much better than that last minute essay written on a napkin with an argos pen that probably would have been.

So any way whats been up?..

This feels like some sort of filler in heat magazine, i really should be asking what really turns me off about a woman but to be honest, thats pretty irrelevant and i am both the inverviewer and interviwee, and im pretty cretain no one wants to hear if i believe in love at first sight or some bull like that.

Anyway this week has been pretty awsome met some really "safe"(cool) people and generally been going out a lot. Theres some decent clubs and bars in leicester although nothing compares to london, i do like the closeness and convienence of it all. Took a trip to manchester to see an old friend this weekend, its ace up there although rather difficult and a lot of effort to get to various places as buses generally smell of wee and diesel which is not a good combination (on their own their not great either). Came back via nottingham to see a man about a dog then pretty much slept and ate since.

Last week did some skating, not to bad here, met some other skaters joined the society which looks great, it feels good goin out and doing something constructive and healthy as its the only thing keeping me from generally just lying in bed watchin my stomach hit my knees.

I also joined the ski and snowboard society as im a pretty keen snowboarder, dont really know what else to say on that so ill post a picture.

Here we go..

What about work?..

Whay about it? haha i'm really enjoying my course at the moment its jus something i love doin, I love using the PC as a medium because the possibilities are endless and i find i can express myself more using one. Don't get me wrong i am also an extremly skilled artist . But i do love drawing also and being able to work on my skills without the pressure of having to justify why a drew what i did it is a great release for me and will enable me to enjoy work a lot more.

So why Game art?..

Basically because it contains two of my great passions, Games and art, simple as that. It made chosing this course a whole lot easier and i feel that this will be something that i will persue as a career and enjoy myself greatly doing it which i think is essential in a line of work as i tend to have a ery short attention span with stuff that disinterests me even if it is important, EG that bloody library lecture i got up at half 8 for 2 weeks ago after approximatly 2 hours sleep thinking it was a very importand lecture... so dont bore me ha.

I've Enjoyed playing games pretty Much all my life I remember dying to get the megadrive what an awsome console that was ive never devoted so much time to anything in one sitting as i did to sonic the hedgehog ahh the memories. Modern times call for modern solutions however and since my megadrive us up in the great arcade in the sky i stick to playinng most my retro games now on my psp emulator which in my opinion is amazing, "fanjita" your a legend check out his website he is a true genious, Click here for fanjita's place.

Give me any modern game and i think ill enjoy it except full on japanese manga shite which really does annoy me. At the moment im playing a wide variety of games but generally i play a lot of simulation, RPG, FPS, and sports games i would say thats is where i gain most of my enjoyment.

My top five games at the moment (just for the blogs purpose)

UT 2004 (multiplayer) - PC

The Sims 2 - PC

Zelda 64 and the ocerana of time (awsome) - N64

Pro Evo 5 - PSP ans PS2

Dont laugh - Lego star wars trust me is simple yet amazing - PC

My Top five games of all Time

Sonic the hedgehog 2 - Megadrive

The sims (all) - PC

Golden eye - N64

GTA (all) but san andreas ultimatly - PS2

Quake/Doom im un decided - PC/PSone

My top 3 games of the future which i will own

Spore - Will Wright's (sims) new creation not heard about it u will to, set to be the most customisable game ever - PC check the official website.

Here is the trailor link

And some gameplay footage just for you HERE

align="center">

2.
